Corinne Bailey Rae – ‘I’d Do It All Again’

In the build up to Corinne’s first album for some time now, The Sea, her first single ‘I’d do it all Again’ was kindly popped in the post for my consumption. A soft, soulful rendition at first the harmony builds in time with her voices emotion and elocution. Hugely expressive the accordion and lead guitar combination is reminiscent of 60’s soul compositions though with a gospel twist.

The topic of the single is love, and when you bear in mind Corinne’s loss of her husband and the reflective but optimistic nature of the songs title an huge sense of admiration and bravery fills me. The track is not defined by building melodies and crescendo. A distinct emphasis is placed on gentle layering too. The track repeatedly builds then falls, perhaps indicative of loves nature? The stirring of your heart, the joy this brings and disquiet that follows a relationships conclusion?

Both the album and the single are out on the first of the coming month, the single is truly lovely and I must admit that, yes, I would do it all again,I have and will continue to do so, play it that is, until I either break something or am forced into silence by a friend. Which has been known to happen.
