Hockey have moved very quickly. Their self released 2008 EP ‘Mind Choas’ garnered quite some attention and was soon being touted by Radio 1’s Zane Lowe.

To give a little insight on the almighty power of the Radio 1 playlist committee, Hockey went on to play a further 2 BBC slots this summer, the John Peel Stage at Glastonbury and then appeared on Later with Jools Holland.  Hockey are now signed to Capitol (US) and Virgin (UK).

For men with such chaotic minds, Hockey’s album, their first, is a surprising and extraordinarily cohesive record that blends chunky beats, razor-sharp lyrics and a whole lot of soul. Or in the words of other media outlets;

Serious disco-tinged indie jams… Hockey are set to bully-off big-time this yearDazed & Confused

All rather positive then.

With the band channelling influences from Tom Petty to The Cars to Roxy Music to Michael Jackson to LCD Soundsystem to the Wu Tang Clan, singer Ben Grubin combines a vocal soulfulness and a certain vulnerability with and a dreamy imagination. The band’s debut album was released earlier this year, it’s well worth a listen.
