Jay-Z and U2 share the same stage. Chris Martin sulks.
Mr. Beyonce, aka Jay-Z, continues to demolish genre barriers. His indie credibility is building, following jaunts with Coldplay and a headlining set at Glastonbury, and he has now ticked off a performance with U2 on his bucket list.
The Brooklyn born rapper joined stadium rock titans U2 on stage during the EMA’s in Berlin. A star studded line up (including Beyonce, Katy Perry and Foo Fighers) performed on Thursday night. Bono has been too busy with his humanitarian efforts to record any good music recently, but its plain to see that U2 are still an awesome live band. Fortunately, they performed “Sunday Bloody Sunday”, taken from 1983’s War, long before the old-age slump kicked in.
Jay-Z capped off the performance with an original verse:
“Yeah… We can’t be opressed. Turn on your radio, out in Berlin walls are falling, revolution is calling. Out in Iran, elections are fixed. Out in Rwanda, the genocide is sick. Turn up your radio, let’s all harmonise to the people in power. Hear the army cries. Buck buck buck be the sound of their tunes. Don’t make me have to mother fucking build some schools. Teach the youth of what lies ahead, teach the truth. Get up, stand up, stand up for your rights.”
Bono even sees fit to attempt a rap at the end, but Jay-Z blows him off the stage by simply uttering “That’s right”.
The 21st century has seen collaboration taken to the next level. Madonna shared a track with Lil’ Wayne. Lethal Bizzle went punk with Gallows. What next? Lupe Fiasco sharing the stage with Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol? A little farfetched perhaps.
