Kris Drever – ‘Mark The Hard Earth’

kris-dreverHaving spent four years away from his band and in high demand as a session musician, Kris Drever has returned. ‘ Mark The Hard Earth’ is his first album for four years will be out on March 8th and is hugely reminiscent of Iron and Wine, CCR and Dylan and maintains the hereditary Celtic tinged folk of his former output. Unsurprising as Kris is the spawn of Ivan Denver, an influential member of Wolfstone.

The simply layered harmonies and rhythm play to great effect, truly inspiring a contentedly repetitive heel to toe movement . Tinged with country, folk, jazz and elements of rock the album is brimming with tales of self progression, travel and testament all conveyed in Kris’s Celt tinged, raspy voice which holds a note in it’s own right, bringing the overtures of the instrumental together in what is a neat and continuous album.

As mentioned this is return to the limelight for Kris, he left Ireland for the burgoening session scene of Edinburgh, creating, collaborating and honing his art to the point where his band released the ‘Fine Friday’ album which received huge critical acclaim. There was a furthe release on the Foot Stompin label before the band split to persue their own paths.

Back to the subject at hand – this album is genuinely lovely, particularly as the days close early and food is best served warm and hearty. A nice compliment to any winter’s eve it is.
