Magic Wands – ‘Black Magic’ EP

The Magic Wands are currently recording their album, they mention fantasy island on their Myspace as a location, perhaps a subtle hint at the of the context and direction that the two piece’s next release will take? I do hope so

It should be something special if their last EP ‘Black Magic’ is anything to go by – the title track holds a quiet anticipation and then turns into post-grunge wet dream, highly satisfying, twisting riffs which then slips a simple yet effective chorus. Quite a tune really.

Needless to say I have played it probably over a hundred times since I received it last week. This included being barred from the turntable at a Halloween do for being a tad obsessive and inconsiderate.

Surely they should have realised it is only proper and decent to give a good tune your total attention and be entirely oblivious to the meek requests for diversity from your friends. Let’s not forget they all liked the tune, for I shall be harboring a comedy resentment for a few weeks. You know who you are Duff Paddy.

The rest of the album is really quite varied, hanging, melodic rhythms combined with introspective, questioning lyrics come out on the song ‘Treasure’ whilst Pet Shop Boysesque drum rolls and distinctly 80’s electronic ballads form the basis of ‘Warrior’, a tale of lust and desire.
