Mark Vidler // ‘Thin Genie’

After a year and half off the playing filed Mark Vidler, the king of the mash-up has returned with another glorious rendition under his Go Home Productions banner. Stripped down versions of Thin Lizzy’s ‘Boys Are Back in Town’ and Ms. Aguilera’s ‘Genie in a Bottle’ come together for this one. An odd coupling on the face of things.

I must admit that the balance between Christina’s music and Phil’s vocals works dang nicely, almost creating a dialogue in the accompanying video. It’s gripping in a slightly perturbing way. The contrast in iconography and social narrative is stark, though emphasis on the spectacle of showbiz is still omnipresent. At least some things never change. Comforting that.

Mark used the thriving UK bootleg scene of 2001 as a starting block, has since gone on to officially produce tracks for all manner of
’legends’ in the music business including David Bowie, Bob Dylan, The Doors, Blondie, The Sex Pistols and diverse artists like
Gang Of Four, Malcolm Mclaren, Ruts DC, Alicia Keys, Siobhan Fahey, Kasabian, Martha & The Muffins, Plaid and Max Sedgley
amongst others.

Based in Watford, and has spent the best part of 9 years producing Bootleg Mash-Ups / Remixes
Radio Sessions / TV Theme & Music Ad works that have achieved a fair degree of worldwide notoriety. Let’s hope after the recent break we’ll be hearing more from him.
