Shy Child – Disconnected

Like the twinkling lights scattered across a busy city skyline, the Brooklyn duo Shy Child’s latest single “Disconnected” is beautifully glinting, sleek and galvanising; a dizzying and intoxicating rush of a pop anthem full to bursting at the seams with a beautifully controlled sense of chaos. As a song it has all the makings of a future classic, but as a precursor to their alluring new gem of an album, “Liquid Love” released on March 15, it couldn’t possibly be any more of a mission statement. Shy Child are back. And boy have they been missed.
If their last album, “Noise Won’t Stop”, with its herky jerky nu-rave comparisons, seems a long time ago, it is because it most definitely is, in more ways than one. Gone are the neon colours and frantic beats of that record, only to be replaced by a more mature, dense and multilayered sound, one which moves seamlessly from ethereal dreaminess to lush sensuality in the blink of an eyelid. As concocted by Pete Cafarella and Nate Smith – and produced by Chris Zane, also responsible for modern classics from Passion Pit and Holy Ghost – “Liquid Love” is chock full of examples of their newfound confidence and versatility, of which “Disconnected” is only the tip of the glittering iceberg.
To make it even more exciting, the single comes packed with white hot remix action, from the stellar likes of new French hotshots Anoraak, Shuttle (Passion Pit’s drummer and Ninja Tune golden child), and others. Already, the single is being championed by Nick Grimshaw and Fearne Cotton, so be sure not to miss their handful of live UK shows next month, which begin with a special one-off gig at White Heat on February 2.
